One of the most rewarding jobs in Norway! Work in Bergen with real people and enjoy real experiences.
Hei! My name is Gaia and I will be helping you through your application
First, what is guiding?
NGS tour guides lead groups by their personality and knowledge. We bring our guests a deeper understanding and enjoyment of special places in and around Bergen.
One day we are guiding a Hanseatic walking tour through Bryggen, and the next, we are exploring Hardangerfjord with a coach group.
Guides are...
Storytellers - we constantly accumulate knowledge and distill it into great stories that bring meaning to the present experience.
Leaders - we are prepared, and inspire confidence and competence in our guests - so that they can feel safe, relaxed and enjoy the experience.
Team-players - we understand that our group of guests is part of a bigger picture, and that in order to achieve anything, we need to cooperate with others.
Ambassadors - we act professionally and represent the company and destination with loyalty, knowing we might be the only local representative our guests would meet.
... And why is guiding for you?
Because guiding connects your passion of storytelling and exploration with our eager and excited guests.
And, with Norwegian Guide Service, you have access to a large and varied pool of tours in the private, cruise and commerical markets.
A good guide is:
- An excellent communicator
- Trustworthy
- Passionate
- Supportive and friendly
- Curious
- Flexible and reliable
- Someone to remember
The guide season is at its busiest between May and September/October. The majority of our Guides need to be available during these months.
What should you expect?
- Guide employment contract
- Guaranteed minimum income per month in the main season
- A competitive hourly rate
- A variety of guests, languages, tours, locations and experiences
- Tours on over 90% of cruise calls in Bergen
- A highly social work environment
- Peak hours between May and October
- Opportunities to work in other locations around Norway
- Incentives to return the following season
- Career opportunities within the tourism network
- Sick pay and holiday pay (feriepenger)
- An office team that actively seeks to provide a good experience and support for guides
On average, Guides who speak both English and German can expect work on average 120 hours per month, or more, and earn a minimum monthly salary of 30,000NOK before tax.
Guide Certification
All Guides who will regularly work with us must first hold Guide Certification in Norway before the start of their contract.
There are a few different certification options at varying prices and at different times of the year.
For Guides who will commit to working with us for the entire main season (May-September/October), we will offer to sponsor their Guide Certification with Guide Academy.
Those who prefer not to choose our sponsorship, must obtain recognised Guide Certification independantly before working with us.

Francesco was friendly and was knowledgeable. He also answered all our questions.
Very nice walk covering Bergen. It was covered at a pace that I was able to keep up with as I use a cane. It was also a great day for a walking tour.

An east 90min walk in Bergen
Guide Matthew was knowledgable and pleasent. The tour took us through little streets and interest points. An easy 90min walk even in the typical Bergen rain.

Dream trip to Norway
We saw so much of Norway’s beautiful sights. Our tour with Lidia was amazing and she was very well versed with Norwegian facts, myths and overall general information. If you get a chance to take a tour ask for Lidia - you won’t be disappointed!

Knowledgeable, Interesting and Wonderful experience
We had a great tour with the guide Francesco. I went on this tour with my wife. The guide was patient enough to allow us to click pictures. He came across as knowledgeable and spoke about many facts of Bergen, which were fascinating to hear.

Our memorable walking tour of Bergen.
We had a wonderful tour with Szilvia our personal guide. The tour was interesting and our guide was great at answering our questions and responding to our personal interests. Even before we were in Norway the correspondence with Bogdan on-line was superb. He responded very quickly and our tour was exactly what we had hoped for. I highly recommend Essence of Bergen Walking Tour and their tour guide Szilvia for anyone visiting Bergen.

Private tour to Osterøy with a personal touch and an excellent guide
I wanted to travel to Osterøy (50 min away from Bergen) where my 'farfar' was born. I had seen information about a hiking path called Kossdalsvegen and I knew there was a sweater factory, Norlender. I researched the bus route but realized it could be tricky at best. I recalled the Bergen Visitors Center told me about the Norwegian Guide Service. I got assistance from the hotel staff to call and within 1/2 hour, I had a 'yes' for a 4+ hour private tour to the island. I knew as soon as I met Bogdan that I had made the right decision. The tour was tailored to my requests. We saw the hiking trail and got a tour of the factory. We arrived by the bridge but returned on the ferry. Since we passed the home of Ole Bull, Bogdan played the most famous piece he composed.Bogdan was knowledgeable and informative and also curious about seeing the places that I had chosen, so that he could become even more familiar with this unique area. We stopped at a local church and a local store for refreshment. Bogdan was able to discuss the history and style of the church, how the locals arrive to the store by boat, and was helpful with taking photos as I walked on some of the switchback path. Bogdan was upbeat, personal, intelligent and could not have provided a better experience. I did not want to have any regrets about not getting to Osterøy and treated myself to the private tour and I am so glad that I did. It was absolutely perfect!

"Moving to Bergen was a thrilling experience and guiding for NGS gave me the work stability and flexibility that I needed to pursue further studies here as well. I now feel like I am a part of the city's unique fabric: a vibrant community of international cultures with a rich history. Skål!"

"Best part of my job is talking to people from all over the world in different languages while sharing my knowledge about a beautiful country like Norway. I love working in a multicultural environment, learning new things every day."
Raffaella - in Italian, Spanish, French & English since 2023
"I’ve been combining being a musician and a guide for many years now. Both jobs are about communication which is what excites me. Getting information across, be it historical facts, anecdotes or insights into local culture. Living in London I discovered Bergen in the mid 2000s and instantly fell in love. Kept coming back and finally moved here 2 years ago. Best move ever. Bergen should come with a warning!"
Neal - in German & English since 2023
"I am still guiding with NGS after 20 years - even in my retirement. It is so rewarding to hear my guests' feedback at the end of our time together."
Frode - in Norwegian, English & German since 1991
"I became a tour guide after my family's move to Norway and I never looked back. I love my job because I get to meet people from various corners of the world and can contribute to making their holiday memories richer and even more enjoyable. I keep saying to our guests: this is not a goodbye, only see you again! "
